RAPCON Cable Project

MCS contributed efforts for the Radar Approach Control (RAPCON) Relocation Project. This involved cable project needs including fiber optic and copper cable installations to the new location of the RAPCON system.

What is RAPCON?

RAPCON stands for Radar Approach Control. RAPCON systems help with air traffic operations. “They provide critical flight information to any aircraft within those parameters including non-military flights coming from nearby air traffic facilities, also known as overflights” (Senior Airman Luke Kitterman, 27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs; 2017). Overall, these tools provide the ability to ensure the safe flow of air traffic operations.

Our Role

MCS and LCI (the MCS Team) worked together to relocate the Radar Approach Control (RAPCON) system. The project entailed moving the cable network system to the new location and construction of a new canopy. Additionally, this project included fiber optic cable installation and copper cable installation.

First, this project included constructing a new outside plant (OSP) fiber optic cable (FOC) pathway. This allowed the accommodating connectivity of the RAPCON system components. Then, we constructed a new canopy, expanded power provisions to the new RAPCON facility, and relocated and connected the RAPCON system components.

After that, our MCS team successfully relocated all RAPCON equipment from the previous RAPCON facility. We reconnected all subsystems to the new power sources. Additionally, we relocated the DASR Parrot antenna and associated equipment to the roof of the Air Traffic Control Tower. In conclusion, we connected all installed equipment to the Communications demark.
